New Zealand-based Lighthouse Gin has commenced production at its new distillery on a site that’s home to two wineries owned by its parent, Foley Family Wines & Spirits.
Three months on from unveiling a name change to better reflect its presence in spirits, FFWS confirmed today that the distillery, based at The Runholder near Wellington on New Zealand’s North Island, is now fully operational. The facility also houses the company’s Te Kairanga and Martinborough Vineyard businesses.
Founded in 2005 and acquired by FFWS ten years ago, Lighthouse will produce its namesake gin brand in the “purpose-built” distillery, using a new, 700-litre hybrid column and pot still. The move comes as the brand is poised for expanded distribution internationally beyond its current footprint, which comprises New Zealand and the US.
California-based FFWS relaunched the gin in its home market last year.
“Our first distillery, which was cobbled together in an old orchard shed, was a true passion project and I am incredibly proud of what we were able to achieve from those humble beginnings,” said head distiller Rachel Hall. “This new distillery was purpose-built from the ground up, which is an incredible luxury for any head distiller, especially when handcrafting a … gin like Lighthouse.”
Six months ago, FFWS agreed a worldwide distribution arrangement for the El Mexicano tequila portfolio.
