The Bollinger Group has strengthened its presence in Burgundy, acquiring Château d’Etroyes in the French wine region.

The transaction, which completed late last month, was conducted through the Champagne, wine and spirits group’s Domaine Chanson business, which is also based in Burgundy. When contacted by Global Drinks Intel, a company spokesperson declined to disclose the sum paid.

Château d’Etroyes owns 50 hectares of vines “at the heart of the Mercurey and Rully terroirs” in the Côte Chalonnaise sub-region of Burgundy. According to Bollinger CEO Etienne Bizot, Burgundy “is one of the – if not the – most recognised wine regions in the world … for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay”.

“With this acquisition,” Bizot said, “Maison Chanson continues its value strategy by expanding its range of high-quality estate wines in these ‘Village’ and ‘Premiers Crus’ appellations.”

Chanson MD Vincent Avenel added: “Our vines in Côte de Beaune will obtain organic certification in 2024. It is quite natural that we have set ourselves the objective to convert the vines of Château d’Etroyes within the next five years.”

As well as the Burgundy operations and its namesake Champagne, privately-owned Bollinger also owns Champagne Ayala and the Delamain Cognac and Anaë gin brands.
