UK-based start-up The Tidal Rum has come up with a novel ‘distilled-at-sea’ concept for a new expression, in partnership with P&O Cruises.

Golden Tide contains spirit produced by a 50-litre still on board P&O’s Arvia cruise liner, which operates around the Caribbean. Once blended with an older rum, the iteration will then be made available to passengers on the ship, while an on-land version will also go on sale this month.

A bottle of Golden Tide will retail for GBP40 [US$48] on the Arvia.

Founded three years ago, The Tidal Rum sources ingredients from the shoreline of its native island of Jersey, which is off the north-west coast of France, to feature as botanicals in the distilling process.

“The distillate is created with a white Bajan (Barbados) rum and the core six coastal botanicals including rock samphire and sea spaghetti,” a spokesperson told Global Drinks Intel. “The distillate is then mixed with a … five-year aged Bajan rum, and bottled in Anderson’s bar on-site for customers to enjoy on board and in the bar.”

Elsewhere in the rum category, Colombian brand Dictador unveiled an “extremely aged” expression last month that, thanks in part to its 24-carat gold bottle, starts at US$1.5m per unit.
