Port producers are finding post-pandemic success in targeting serves with mixers in the on-premise and consumer demand for convenience in the off-premise, according to a recent report.

In the September issue of Global Drinks Intel magazine, which was published earlier this month, executives from several brand owners have highlighted the segment’s renewed focus on innovation in recent months. One executive claimed that tailoring SKUs to particular consumption occasions was bringing new consumers to Port.

“The tradition remains, of course,” said Maeva Fonsino, international brand manager for the Porto Cruz brand at La Martiniquaise-Bardinet, “but the renewal is gradually taking place to open up to new ways of consumption.”

Over at Sogevinus Fine Wines, Joao Tamagnini Belo, the company’s international business manager, noted that “tawny Port on the rocks is a trend in numerous on-trade venues in Seoul”.

Data published in the magazine shows France as the largest market for Port in volume terms, despite a year-on-year dip in 2021 of 1.3%. The segment’s home market, according to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, lies second, with volumes leaping by just under 22% last year.
