Edrington and Pernod Ricard are the latest spirits brand owners to target China’s Global Travel Retail channel, with the pair opening branded outlets for The Macallan and Martell, respectively, in Hainan.
Edrington’s GTR division confirmed this week that its 40-square-metre retail space has commenced trading in the Global Premium Duty Free (GDF) Plaza in Hainan’s Haikou Mova Mall. The unit, which is located at the entrance to the mall’s ‘single malt’ section, is fronted by The Macallan, with a “curated selection” of expressions from the Scotch whisky brand available to try and buy.
Among the iterations on sale are the GTR-exclusive ‘Quest Collection’ and the An Estate, A Community, A Distillery edition from the ‘Anecdotes of Ages’ series of bottlings.
Edrington’s Highland Park single malt also has a dedicated area in the unit.
Pernod, meanwhile, has opened the second store for flagship Cognac brand Martell in Hainan this week. Also situated in the GDF Plaza in downtown Haikou, the 140-square-metre unit features a “robot bartender” as well as personalisation opportunities for Martell’s Cordon Bleu, XO and XXO expressions.

GDF Plaza is home to around 200 international brands, all of which are available duty-free. Haikou is situated on the northern coast of the island province of Hainan, off the mainland’s south coast.
