Shipments of wine to Latin America last year were up 7.7% last year, according to data released this week, with Brazil jumping by double digits.

Citing figures from Ideal.BI, the organisers of the ProWine São Paulo trade show said that exports to the region totalled just over US$1.1bn in the 12 months of 2024. Brazil, which accounts for 42.1% of the total, was up year-on-year by 10.5%.

The market was overshadowed by the Dominican Republic, which soared by 20.6%, and Colombia at +10.7%. Wine producing nations, meanwhile, tend to stick to their own wares; Argentina and Chile each accounted for “less than” 1% of Latin America’s wine imports last year.

The direction of travel for wine exports to Brazil has been impressive over the last decade, doubling in volume and growing in value terms by 58% in 2024 compared to 2014.

“Brazil’s wine imports are highly concentrated, primarily sourced from Argentina, Chile, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain,” said ProWine São Paulo director Christian Burgos. “Overall, market development in Brazil has been steady, characterised by phases of expansion and minor retrenchments – a pattern reminiscent of a bullish stock market with higher highs and higher lows.

“A long-term perspective and collaboration with key partners are essential for success in the Brazilian market, as demonstrated by initiatives like ProWine São Paulo.”

The ProWine São Paulo trade show takes place in the Brazilian city from 30 September to 2 October.
