The group, which will report is half-year results later this week, has partnered with Champagne Thiénot for Penfold’s latest extension. Rolling out to “select markets” worldwide in September, Penfolds Champagne Cuvée Brut will retail in Australia at AUD79 (US$51.50).

Five years ago, Treasury launched three champagnes from Penfolds, albeit on a smaller scale to this week’s development, all of which were from the 2012 vintage.

Penfolds’ chief winemaker, Peter Gago, worked with Nicolas Uriel, Thiénot’s chef de cave, on the new release, which is priced at the lower end of the brand’s pricing bracket.

“As a global luxury brand, we work in some of the world’s best winemaking regions,” said Penfolds MD Tom King. “It’s an absolute privilege to be part of the French winemaking community, working closely with local producers and growers to continue to evolve our French wines … .”

About 16 months ago, Treasury announced the majority-control purchase of Château Lanessan in Bordeaux, a transaction that “doubles the existing production capacity for Penfolds in France”.
