The name change is based around the group’s oldest port wine house.

Portuguese wine company Sogevinus Fine Wines has changed its name to Kopke Group, in recognition of its oldest port brand.

The privately-owned business said all of its brands, including Barros, Burmester, Calém, Kopke, Quinta da Boavista, São Luiz and Velhotes, will maintain their “own unique … identity” under its new name. The logo for the business has also changed: rather than a single bunch of grapes as previously, eight bunches have been clustered together to form the shape of a star.

The updated logo also now includes “By Escotet Family Estates”, who are investors in Kopke Group.

The fresh branding coincides with the opening of the group’s latest Portuguese hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia, just south of Porto. Tivoli Kopke Hotel follows the opening of the group’s first hotel, The Vine House, which opened in 2022 in São Luiz.

“Today, we are no longer Sogevinus – we are now the Kopke Group,” said CEO Pedro Braga. “We chose this name because it is a name that the world knows, and because it is the name of our oldest wine brand. It now represents the group’s wine brands – all equally – like an older brother representing his younger brothers.”

Figures released last month showed that worldwide wine production last year fell to its lowest level since 1961. Meanwhile, world wine consumption also declined in 2024, down 3.3% to 214.2m hectolitres, which also stands at its lowest level since 1961.
