The Scotch Whisky Association has appointed the first female chair in its 114-year history, with William Grant & Sons’ Rita Greenwood set to take the position.

Greenwood (below), who was vice chair from January 2024, assumes the chair after Chivas Brothers CEO Jean-Etienne Gourgues completes his two-year term this month. The post oversees the trade association’s council, which consists of 16 representatives from its member companies who play a “central role in shaping the strategic direction and policy priorities of the scotch whisky industry”.

Having been with William Grant since 2008, when she joined as MD of global travel retail operations, Greenwood moved through the ranks, including time as MD for the UK & Ireland and regional president of Europe, the Middle East & Africa, to become is chief investment officer in October 2023.

“Scotch whisky is being significantly impacted by multiple headwinds both here at home and in our global markets, but the industry is focused on overcoming these challenges and delivering long-term sustainable growth,” said SWA chief executive Mark Kent.

“The work of the SWA council is vitally important to ensure scotch whisky is best placed to make the most of future opportunities. Rita’s experience … and deep understanding of the scotch whisky sector will help to drive forward the important work before us, ensuring the industry reaches 2030 in a position of strength.”

Two months ago, Global Drinks Intel reported exclusively that William Grant had parted company with its CEO, Søren Hagh. The news was confirmed a few days later, with CFO Graeme Jenkins partnering with CCO Doug Bagley to “provide leadership and be responsible for managing the company’s business, with the support of the executive board”.
