ANNOUNCING THE GLOBAL DRINKS INTEL ESG AWARDS 2023

Rémy Cointreau has agreed a tie-up with the French unit of glass packaging manufacturer Verallia.

The brand owner, which has set 2050 as its target to hit “net zero”, is building on its existing arrangement with Verallia France as part of a portfolio-wide review. With the VSOP expression of Cognac flagship Rémy Martin and the Cointreau brand already benefitting from an increase in use of recycled glass, Mount Gay rum, St-Rémy brandy and Belle de Brillet liqueur are all lined up to utilise lighter bottles.

Mount Gay’s bottles will move from the current 600 grams to 570g, while St-Rémy will shift from 660g to 645g. At the same time, bottles for Belle de Brillet will be reduced from 620g to 550g. “These initial reductions – between -2% and -11% of the glass weight of the bottles – lower the carbon emissions linked both to producing the glass and transporting the bottles,” Rémy Cointreau said.

Further specific details around the partnership were not disclosed.

Group operations director Patrick Marchand added: “We are reviewing our entire portfolio with the ultimate goal of 100% of our bottles being eco-designed and recyclable (or reusable). The combination of … our two groups’ shared environmental values contributes to rapid innovation and the emergence of sustainable solutions … .”

Late last month, Rémy Cointreau posted a 10.1% year-on-year lift in sales from the 12 months to the end of March.
