Pernod Ricard has followed its recently-announced plans to boost Scotch whisky production with the divestment of the Tormore distillery in Speyside.

The transaction, announced late yesterday, will see the facility and the Tormore brand move across to Elixir Distillers, a privately-owned company founded by brothers Rajbir and Sukhinder Singh. The pair, who are also in the process of setting up a distillery on the western island of Islay, offloaded their spirits e-commerce business, The Whisky Exchange, to Pernod in September.

Financial details were not disclosed in either instance.

Opened in 1958, Tormore Distillery presently has an annual capacity of approaching 5m litres of alcohol. The site produces its namesake 14- and 16-year-old single malts.

An GBP88m (US$108m) investment, announced by Pernod’s Chivas Brothers division two months ago, will increase the group’s overall Scotch production capacity by 14m litres of alcohol. The spend will up production at Pernod’s Aberlour and Miltonduff distilleries.

Five-year-old Elixir Distillers intends to open the Portintruan (pronounced ‘Port-nah-truan‘) distillery near the town of Port Ellen on Islay in 2024.
