North America’s tequila landscape is shifting fast.

After two decades of explosive expansion, the category is now behaving like a mature spirits market, one shaped by economic pressure, oversupply of agave, and a more discerning consumer.

Today, the US is seeing marginal volume decline, a sharp contraction at the super-premium price tier as well as a clear ‘hollowing out of the middle’ as only the biggest brands and the most distinctive craft producers hold their ground.

t the same time, the power of celebrity is weakening, replaced by a strengthening consumer demand for transparency, production integrity and demonstrable authenticity. As Tequila Arette’s sales & marketing director, Eduardo Orendain notes: “The consumer is catching up to the category.

“It’s no longer just about trying tequila; it’s about understanding it.”

For brands such as Tequila Arette, this shift is less a challenge than a moment of alignment. Produced at the historic El Llano Distillery, Arette has long anchored itself in heritage, family ownership and traditional production. These attributes now sit at the centre of consumer decision-making.

Orendain frames the change succinctly: “Arette isn’t a brand that was created for marketing,” he notes. “It’s a brand that comes from a place with rich history and tradition.”

This mirrors the broader direction of travel for the tequila category. As consumers ask more sophisticated questions about additives, process and provenance, brands are required to lean into education and transparency, to open up their production story and the values that have always defined it.

The situation reflects a market where retailers report that discounts no longer drive behaviour, bartenders see guests arriving with deeper knowledge and additive-free or process-led brands are gaining traction.
