The production of Angostura bitters, one of the world’s most recognised cocktail ingredients, is now powered by solar energy.

The solar photovoltaic system with 432 panels, installed on the roof of the bitters bottling plant, supplies clean, renewable energy to support daily production operations. The system is complemented with a 344-kilowatt Battery Energy Storage System, ensuring efficient energy storage and utilisation across the facility.

At peak capacity, the installation is expected to generate sufficient power to operate the bitters bottling machinery. However, the facility remains connected to the national grid to ensure uninterrupted operations, reinforcing reliability while reducing our carbon footprint. The plant produces Angostura aromatic bitters, Angostura orange bitters and Angostura cocoa bitters.

This milestone project was completed by local engineering firms, highlighting Angostura’s commitment to local expertise and innovation.

Angostura has incorporated solar power into other areas of operations, including forklift charging stations, and will expand this into administrative buildings in the coming months. The charging stations power electric forklifts used in the movement of raw materials and finished goods. This ensures that operational logistics are aligned with the company’s broader sustainability objectives, contributing to a cleaner, more efficient supply chain.

This sustainable initiative reduces reliance on non-renewable energy sources, lowers operational costs and contributes to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.

Chair of Angostura Holdings, Gary Hunt said, “The very bitters that carry the name of Trinidad and Tobago to bars, restaurants, and homes across the world will now be produced through a smarter, cleaner and more sustainable energy system. This project is an investment not only in operational excellence, but in legacy. It is about proving that manufacturing, profitability and environmental responsibility can and must coexist.”

As global demand continues to grow for brands that prioritise sustainability, Angostura remains committed to aligning its operations with international climate and sustainability goals, while maintaining the exceptional quality that has defined its products for more than 200 years.
