Berry Bros & Rudd and Symington Family Estates have acquired UK-based Hambledon Vineyard, “the first commercial English vineyard of the modern era”.

The two companies, which initially announced the move for Hambledon in September, have seen their offer, valued at around GBP22.3m [US$27.5m], accepted by enough shareholders to prompt the mandatory purchase of all remaining shares in the wine business. Subsequently, the joint venture will take full control of Hambledon in a move framed as identifying the potential for English sparkling wine.

The transaction, which will see Hambledon transition to private ownership, includes 200 acres of vineyard, home to vines planted as far back as 1952, as well as the production facility and full brand portfolio.

“We are delighted to confirm this exciting joint venture with Symington Family Estates,” said Berry Bros chair Lizzy Rudd. “Together, we are committed to sustainable viticulture and winemaking, and we believe that this business, which was the first commercial English vineyard of the modern era, has the foundations and potential to lead the way in the English sparkling wine category.”

Symington’s chair, Johnny Symington, added: “It was going to take something very special for us to make wine in a new country, having produced Port and wine in Portugal for five generations. Following lengthy analysis of the English sparkling wine category we are thrilled to be acquiring one of the leading producers in partnership with Berry Bros. & Rudd.”

According to the two companies, Hambeldon has an annual capacity to produce in the region of 500,000 units.
