The founder & interim CEO of The Boston Beer Co has relinquished some of his responsibilities, resulting in the creation of a COO post.

Jim Koch, who returned to lead operations on a temporary basis in August, has agreed to the promotion of chief supply chain officer, Phil Hodges, to the new role. Hodges (below) has been with the group since May 2022 and in his current position since May 2023.

Phil Hodges

Hodges career in beer has taken in stints with SABMiller, prior to its takeover by AB InBev, and Carlsberg. on both occasions in a supply chain capacity. He had been SAB’s CSCO for barely four months in late 2015 before moving on to Carlsberg a year later, where he was executive VP of group supply chain based out of Zurich for five-and-a-half year.

Replacing him as Boston Beer’s CSCO will be Phil Savastano, who started at the Samuel Adams Pennsylvania Brewery 19 months ago.

For the first six months of 2025, group sales came in at 3.6% up on the corresponding period a year earlier, as the first quarter’s +6.5% showing was followed by a less impressive sales rise of 1.5% in Q2. The next set of results are scheduled to be announced on 23 October.
