Muriel Wines has acquired Spanish wine brand Marqués de la Concordia, which was put up for auction last month following the bankruptcy of its former owner.

The transaction, which took place at an online public auction run by International Auction Group (IAG), included the rioja as well as a “full set of associated trademark registrations”, Muriel Wines said. The hammer price was not disclosed.

Muriel Wines, also based in Spain’s Rioja region, said Marqués de la Concordia would “retain its own identity”, as a “well-established brand with national and international recognition and a presence across different markets”. “Our aim is to build on the heritage of Marqués de la Concordia and develop its full potential from a long-term perspective,” Muriel Wines said.

The brand’s former owner, Marqués de la Concordia Family of Wines, filed for bankruptcy in 2022. Local news outlet Expansión reported at the time that the group was EUR64.4m (then-US$68.55m) in debt. As well as its namesake wine brand, Marques de la Concordia Family of Wines owned the Lagunilla, Marques de Monistrol and Rioja Santiago wine marks. The group also produced vermouth, muscat, gin and rum.

Global Drinks Intel has contacted IAG for information on the sale of the remaining assets, which were part of the same auction.

“The addition of Marqués de la Concordia represents another step forward in the steady growth Muriel Wines has been pursuing in recent years,” said Muriel Wines’ CEO, Javier Murúa. “We are bringing into our portfolio a brand with a strong track record and significant recognition, backed by the strength of a group that today has a consolidated structure, a diversified portfolio and the capacity to continue growing.”

Last year, Spain’s Zamora Co acquired a majority stake in Bodegas Godeval, the Valdeorras-based producer of Galicia’s godello grape variety.
