The UK division of Damm has agreed the purchase from Greene King of the Old Speckled Hen portfolio of beer brands in the country.
The unit of the Spanish group confirmed the transaction earlier today (20 May), albeit for an undisclosed sum. Included in the acquisition are Old Speckled Hen, along with the mark’s low-alcohol extension, as well as Old Golden Hen, Old Crafty Hen and Old Master Hen.
Following the completion of a “transition process”, the duration of which was not detailed, production of the full stable will head to Damm’s Damm Eagle Brewery in England, which was bought from Carlsberg four years ago and was the subject of a GBP70m (then-US$94m) investment by the privately-owned group in October.
The facility has been brewing Damm’s flagship Estrella Damm lager for the UK market since early 2024.
“We are proud to have built Old Speckled Hen into one of the nation’s favourite ales over the last 25 years and are delighted to have secured a partner in Estrella Damm who will continue to brew the ales in the UK,” said Greene King CEO Nick Mackenzie.
The MD of Damm UK, Luke White, added: “We have great respect for the history Greene King has built around Old Speckled Hen … . The brand not only complements the current portfolio range by adding another category to our offering, but it also reconnects the Damm Eagle Brewery to its historic British beer and ale production roots.”
Also this week, Damm released details of its next marketing activation for Estrella in the UK.
