Investors should seek out opportunities in the booming US$2.3bn alcoholic bottle recycling market, a new research report contends.

The size of the global alcoholic bottle recycling market is set to jump by 7.5% per year for the next decade to total $5bn by 2034, according to a report by Transparency Market Research.

Among the factors fuelling the market’s growth include the recognition by companies, governments and NGOs of the important role recycling can play in combatting climate change, the report claims. At the same time, consumers continue to grow increasingly eco-conscious, while  technological advances in recycling processes have made the recycling of glass more efficient and cost-effective.

Last year, for example, Dutch recycling firm Sibelco introduced technology to more efficiently separate clear, brown and green glass bottles during recycling, the report highlights, while Turkish glass manufacturer Sisecam introduced advanced sorting and purification techniques to make recycled glass more suitable for premium bottles.

In geographical terms, Asia Pacific dominates the existing alcoholic bottle recycling market, the report maintains, a trend driven by increased consumer sales. However, in the US, 7.6m tons of glass per year are not recycled, according to data from The US Environmental Protection Agency, highlighting the need for more efficient recycling schemes across North America.

The growing demand for more sustainable drinks packaging is sure to be one of the key trends on display at the Luxe Pack trade show in Monaco (September 30-October 2), which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.
