How champagne is navigating the challenges of 2024 – Category Intel

Exports may have plummeted in leading markets, but champagne is steadily increasing its overall footprint – and finally seeking a more balanced relationship with the environment.

After three years of Covid-19-related volatility, there are signs that the champagne market globally is settling down somewhat. Not so long ago, houses were concerned about having enough wine to supply their markets and allocations were running short; now, thanks to a combination of larger harvests and softening demand, there is even talk of taking action to prevent oversupply.In 2023, total champagne shipments fell by 8.2% to 299m bottles - close to the pre-pandemic level of 297.3m bottles recorded in 2019 - and trends in France and overseas were similar, with both also dipping by 8.2%
