Earlier this month, Global Drinks Intel announced the winners of its inaugural ESG Awards. Here’s a look at why the winners won.

Global Travel Retail Operator Green Champion – Gebr. Heinemann

Last year saw Heinemann introduce its ‘Standards for Socially Responsible & Environmentally Friendly Point-of-Sale Materials’. Designed to heighten suppliers’ awareness and to encourage the switch to more sustainable alternatives, the standards are set to become mandatory from next year.

The retail operator has also started measuring emissions to include ‘Scope 3’. The approach will shape reduction measures going forward and allow for more efficient progress tracking.

On the front line, Heinemann has introduced a reusable bag scheme for shoppers, while a deposit system for its suppliers’ transport packaging has also been implemented.

Finally, the company has reviewed its product portfolio, which has resulted in 25% of its consumables being switched to more sustainable alternatives.

Special Commendation – Lagardère Travel Retail

Over at Lagardère, a local approach in Italy impressed the judges. At the Aelia Duty Free outlet in Palermo airport in Sicily, the operator has partnered with around 30 local suppliers. “As a result,” Lagardère said, “60% of sales in Palermo come from products sourced in Italy, of which more than half in Sicily.”

Meanwhile, in France, the group donates overstocks from its stores in Paris-Charles de Gaulle to 13 charities in the vicinity of the airport. The donations equate to around EUR250,000 [US$264,000] worth of food per year, resulting in the avoidance of around 80 tons of waste.
