Earlier this month, Global Drinks Intel announced the winners of its inaugural ESG Awards. Here’s a look at why the winners won.

Global Travel Retail Green Champion – Brand Owner – Pernod Ricard

An “eco-design” lifecycle assessment tool earned Pernod Ricard the top spot in this global travel retail-specific category.

The tool, described as an “industry first”, is applied as standard practice across merchandising and point-of-sale activations by the brand owner’s GTR unit.

Initially trialled at the Martell-branded outlet at CDFG Haitang Bay in Hainan, the approach comprises an assessment of “the environmental implications of all design aspects of merchandising units – such as wall-bays, gondolas and boutiques – including choice of supplier, selection of materials, modularity, power consumption, logistics arrangements, end-of-life material destination and overall lifecycle carbon footprint”.

The retail units that had been designed with the tool showed an almost 20% reduction in carbon footprint over their lifecycle, backed by the introduction of FSC timber products and non-PVC vinyl materials, along with the elimination of ‘red list’ materials, such as formaldehyde, from all projects.

Following the trial, the tool has subsequently gone global, applying to 114 projects and achieving a 48% CO2e [carbon dioxide equivalent] reduction from the activities – down from 227,850kg to 118,852kg.
