Heineken is set to add an eighth brewery to its production footprint in Mexico, with almost US$500m earmarked for the new facility.

The group’s unit in the country, which was bolstered markedly by 2010’s acquisition of Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma from FEMSA, will benefit from a EUR340m [US$460m] investment in the new site, in Yucatán’s Kanasín municipality. Production is expected to commence in 2026 following the completion of construction.

The brewery will be Heineken Mexico’s most easterly in the country, with Yucatán offering “stellar infrastructure, economic development and security”, according to the state’s governor, Mauricio Vila Dosal.

Among the beer brands expected from the facility, production capacity details of which were not disclosed, are Tecate, Dos Equis, Indio, Bohemia, Amstel Ultra and Sol.

“Mexico plays a pivotal role as one of the company’s foremost global markets,” said group CEO Dolf van den Brink. “This investment … is designed to propel growth and seize the abundant opportunities that the Mexican market presents.”

The company is not the only multinational brewer heading to Mexico’s Gulf Coast: Constellation Brands, which owns the Modelo beer brands in the US, is building a facility in the Veracruz region after its initial plans to add a new site near the border prompted local protests around water usage.

In results for the first six months of this year, reported in late July, sales in Heineken’s ‘Americas’ region, which includes Mexico, increased by 8.6% versus the corresponding period in 2022.
