Beam Suntory’s Japanese whisky division has recruited actor Keanu Reeves and director Sofia Coppola to help celebrate its centenary.
The ‘Suntory Anniversary Tribute’ mini-film, which can be viewed below, marks a return for Reeves, who appeared in an ad for the House of Suntory unit’s Suntory Reserve in the early 1990s. The latest spot, directed by Coppola, debuted at an event in New York this week and runs on House of Suntory’s official website.
A set of limited edition versions of the Hakushu and Yamazaki brands has also been lined up worldwide for the anniversary, including Hakushu’s 18-year-old peated malt and Yamazaki’s 18-year-old Mizunara expressions. Meanwhile, both brands’ 12-year-old iterations will also feature limited labels to mark the occasion.
Reeves will front a series of documentaries about Japanese whisky later this year as part of the tie-up with Beam Suntory.
In February, parent company Suntory unveiled a JPY10bn [US$76.2m] investment in the Hakushu and Yamazaki distilleries.
