Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits has completed “a four-year search for the right Tequila brand” and has bought into the Cantera Negra brand.
The acquisition of a stake from current owner Two Sons Imports comes with exclusive sales and marketing control for Connecticut-based Deutsch. Framed as a joint venture, details around the size of the holding – as well as the price paid – were not disclosed.
The Cantera Negra portfolio – the brand’s name translates as ‘black quarry’ – includes a Silver, a Reposado, an Añejo and an Extra Añejo that retail in the US for between US$49.99 and $119.99 per bottle. The brand also has a coffee-flavoured liqueur extension, Café, which is available in the market for $34.99.
“Our partnership with Two Sons is the culmination of a four-year search for the right Tequila brand and the right partners,” said CEO Peter Deutsch. “Cantera Negra represents a critical addition to our five-year strategy to help us scale our luxury spirits business by providing consumers with an exceptional quality Tequila option to choose instead of more mass-produced offerings.”
In the 12 months to the end of September, Canter Negra’s US volumes totalled 20,000 nine-litre cases, according to figures cited in the announcement. The brand is currently on sale in 28 US states.
