Bacardi is ceasing the use of non-refillable fitments across a raft of its brands in a move designed to reduce the group’s use of plastic.

In the US and Canada, the withdrawal of the anti-fraud “plastic pourers” will apply to 1.75-litre bottles for the namesake rum brand’s Coconut, Gold and Superior rum expressions. The fitting is also being retired from the company’s full portfolio in Portugal and Spain.

According to Bacardi, the decision will result in a reduction of single-use plastic in the region of 140 tons per year. The company is also set to have removed all single-use plastic from gift packs and point-of-sale materials by the end of 2023.

Details of how the brand owner will prevent refilling of its bottles going forward were not immediately available.
