Closure providers are queuing up to help beverage brand owners boost their sustainability credentials in the eyes of the consumer, according to a recent report.

In this month’s issue of Global Drinks Intel magazine, companies including Amcor Capsules, Amorim and Tapi Group have explained how they’ve leaned on technology to help them offer environmentally-friendlier closures than before. Among the measures that are available to brand owners are varnish-free wood-based closures that retain a varnished effect, bio-based plastic liners and the use of QR codes inside closure liners that could provide recycling guidance.

“A few years ago, we introduced a broad sustainability policy, aiming not only to reduce our environmental impact but also to review our internal processes,” Italy-based Tapi told Global Drinks Intel. “We are also detailing the life cycle of our products and their environmental impact.”

In Czech, glass closure producer Vinolok is among the companies looking to capitalise on the United Nations’ ‘International Year of Glass’ this year. “More than ever, we communicate all the advantages of glass in packaging,” said marketing manager Kateřina Slezáková. “Vinolok is part of it.

“The beauty of the glass closure is also an … added value.”
